Canadian Ex-NATO Intern Detained in Belgium in Espionage Investigation

Belgian authorities have arrested a Canadian woman who previously worked as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons as part of an ongoing espionage investigation.

According to prosecutors, the woman is suspected of gathering intelligence for an unidentified third country and of involvement in a criminal organization. Officials have not released her identity or disclosed which country is allegedly connected to the case.

Belgian Authorities Withhold Identity and Investigation Details

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspect was serving as an intern at SHAPE, one of NATO’s key military command centers. Authorities stated that the investigation remains active, and additional information is being withheld to protect the legal process.

Investigators have not publicly revealed the nature of the alleged espionage activities or the evidence collected during the inquiry. The suspect’s name and other personal details also remain confidential.

NATO Operations Continue Without Disruption

Belgian security agencies launched the investigation after concerns were raised through internal security channels. Authorities conducted searches linked to the case before making the arrest.

A NATO spokesperson said there is currently no indication that the incident has affected the alliance’s operational readiness, command structure, or ongoing military activities. Officials emphasized that SHAPE continues to carry out its responsibilities without interruption while Belgian investigators proceed with the case.
