Former Marine Charged Over Alleged Threats to Donald Trump
Federal authorities have arrested a former U.S. Marine after he was accused of making violent online threats targeting President Donald Trump. Prosecutors allege the suspect posted multiple videos and messages on social media that included explicit threats and calls for violence against the president.
The individual, identified as William Upham, 35, appeared in federal court following his arrest and has been ordered to remain in custody while the case moves forward. If convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison.
Investigators Cite Social Media Videos and Messages
According to court documents, investigators say the suspect uploaded videos while wearing a military-style uniform and made statements encouraging the violent overthrow of the U.S. government. Authorities also allege he referred to President Trump using inflammatory language and discussed methods of carrying out an attack with firearms.
During the investigation, federal agents reportedly discovered additional online communications in which the suspect allegedly declared his intention to kill the president. Officials said these statements raised significant security concerns because they were detailed and appeared to express a willingness to act.
Secret Service Investigation Led to Arrest
The U.S. Secret Service launched an investigation after becoming aware of the alleged online threats. Law enforcement officials also determined that the suspect had access to firearms, which further increased concerns during the investigation.
Government officials emphasized that threats against the President of the United States are taken seriously and are investigated under federal law. Military leaders also stated that the accused no longer represents the values of the Marine Corps.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not yet been proven in court. The defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty through the legal process.
