Mexico Navy Responds to Deadly Ambush in Sinaloa
A security operation in Mexico’s Sinaloa state ended with 10 armed attackers killed and three suspects taken into custody after naval personnel were ambushed while conducting flood-monitoring duties.
According to Mexican authorities, the incident began when navy personnel inspecting rivers and dams ahead of the rainy season were targeted with an explosive device. The patrol was carrying out preventive monitoring to help protect nearby communities from potential flooding.
Three sailors were injured during the initial attack. One later died from injuries, while the remaining two are reported to be in stable condition.
Security Forces Launch Counter-Operation
Following the ambush, security forces quickly launched a response operation in the El Rosario municipality. Officials said the attackers carried out a second assault, but naval personnel successfully repelled the attack.
The confrontation resulted in 10 armed assailants being killed. Authorities also confirmed that three additional suspects were arrested during the operation.
The military has increased security efforts in the area as investigations continue to determine those responsible and identify any criminal groups involved in the attack.
Flood Monitoring Mission Turns Deadly
The patrol was part of a broader effort to monitor water levels in rivers and dams during Mexico’s rainy season. These inspections are intended to provide early warnings to communities that may face flooding risks.
The deadly attack highlights the dangers faced by security personnel even while performing humanitarian and disaster-prevention missions. Officials have expressed condolences to the family of the fallen sailor and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing both public safety and emergency preparedness operations across the region.
