Tennessee National Guard Soldiers Involved in Fatal Memphis Shooting
Two Tennessee National Guard soldiers fatally shot an armed man during a police pursuit in downtown Memphis early Sunday, prompting an investigation by state authorities.
The incident occurred after Memphis police responded to reports of gunfire. Officers encountered a man carrying a handgun, who then fled on foot. National Guard soldiers assigned to the Memphis Safe Task Force joined the pursuit alongside police. During the chase, the situation escalated, leading the soldiers to open fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Investigation Underway
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) identified the deceased as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson. Officials said investigators are working to determine exactly what occurred during the encounter and why deadly force was used.
Authorities have not released the identities of the two National Guard soldiers involved. The investigation remains active, and officials have not announced whether additional evidence, including body camera footage or witness statements, will be made public.
Memphis Safe Task Force Faces Increased Scrutiny
The soldiers were serving with the Memphis Safe Task Force, a joint operation involving local police, federal agencies, and National Guard personnel. The initiative was launched to help reduce violent crime in Memphis and has been promoted by President Donald Trump as part of a broader public safety strategy.
The latest fatal shooting has renewed attention on the task force and the role of National Guard troops assisting local law enforcement. City officials said they are awaiting the results of the TBI investigation before making further comments on the incident.
