A large police operation was launched Thursday morning in the Swiss city of Winterthur after a stabbing attack at the city’s main train station injured several people and caused panic among commuters.
According to regional police, the incident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time near the busy railway station in northeastern Switzerland, close to Zurich. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene while officers secured the area and detained the suspect.
Authorities confirmed that a 31-year-old Swiss man was arrested following the attack. Investigators are currently examining the motive behind the incident.
Multiple Victims Injured During Morning Rush
Police said three people were wounded in the attack and taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The injured victims were identified as Swiss nationals aged 28, 43, and 52.
Local reports described scenes of fear and confusion as commuters and pedestrians rushed away from the station area. Witnesses said emergency services moved rapidly to control the situation and assist the injured.
Several media outlets reported that the suspect allegedly shouted religious phrases during the attack, though officials have not confirmed any extremist motive at this stage.
Heavy Security Presence at Winterthur Station
The train station area was temporarily closed as armed police officers, ambulances, and emergency personnel flooded the location. Security barriers were placed around parts of the station while investigators examined the scene.
Eyewitnesses described seeing frightened passengers running from the platform area after the stabbing began. Some reports also mentioned that schoolchildren were nearby moments before the attack occurred.
Winterthur is one of Switzerland’s largest cities and serves as an important transportation hub near Zurich.
Investigation Into Motive Continues
Swiss authorities said the investigation remains active and further details will be released once officers complete initial questioning and forensic checks.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the stabbing was linked to terrorism or mental health concerns. Police urged the public to avoid speculation while the inquiry continues.
Train services in parts of the station experienced temporary disruption during the emergency response before operations gradually resumed later in the day.
