An Austrian court moved closer to delivering a verdict on Thursday in the high-profile case surrounding a failed terror plot aimed at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna last year. The case has drawn international attention due to the scale of the alleged attack and the cancellation of multiple concert dates.
The main accused, a 21-year-old Austrian man identified in court documents as Beran A., has admitted guilt to several terrorism-related charges connected to the planned assault. Authorities claim the suspect intended to target fans attending Swift’s Eras Tour performances in Vienna in 2024.
Prosecutors Detail Alleged Terror Plan
According to prosecutors, the suspect attempted to obtain illegal weapons, including a machine gun and a hand grenade, while also trying to create homemade explosives using instructions allegedly linked to Islamic State propaganda videos.
Investigators said the planned attack was stopped shortly before Taylor Swift’s scheduled performances in Vienna, leading organizers to cancel all three concerts due to security concerns. The cancellations disappointed thousands of fans who had traveled from different countries to attend the shows.
Officials also told the court that the suspect discussed carrying out attacks using explosives and knives in crowded public areas near the concert venue.
Additional International Attack Allegations
Court proceedings also examined accusations involving possible attack discussions linked to locations in Dubai and Istanbul. Prosecutors claimed the main defendant and another accused individual exchanged messages about possible extremist activities abroad during Ramadan in 2024.
However, defense lawyers argued that their clients were not organizers or leaders of any extremist network and claimed the broader accusations lacked direct evidence of operational planning.
The co-defendants denied supporting another suspect who was reportedly detained in Saudi Arabia in connection with a separate attempted stabbing incident.
Verdict Expected Soon
The defense requested leniency, arguing that the accused had shown remorse and had not completed any attack preparations capable of causing mass casualties. During final remarks in court, the main suspect reportedly apologized for his actions.
If convicted on all major charges, the accused could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years under Austrian anti-terrorism laws.
The court’s decision is expected after jurors complete deliberations in the closely watched case involving one of the most serious alleged threats connected to a major international music tour in recent years.
