A major breakthrough has been made in one of North Carolina’s most talked-about cold cases. Authorities announced the arrest of a suspect connected to the 2008 double homicide at the Sun Drop Bottling Company in Concord, a case that remained unsolved for almost two decades.
Investigators say 43-year-old Johnny Steven Talbert was taken into custody in Port Angeles, Washington, and now faces multiple charges linked to the deadly shooting that killed two people inside the bottling facility.
Suspect Arrested After Years of Investigation
According to police, Talbert was arrested on May 21 following a renewed investigation into the case. Detectives reportedly revisited old evidence and pursued previously overlooked leads, which eventually helped identify the suspect.
The case dates back to June 13, 2008, when officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Sun Drop Bottling Company in Concord, North Carolina. Inside the building, police found 59-year-old office manager Donna Barnhardt and 44-year-old Darrell Noles suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Authorities believe the suspect entered the business during a robbery before fleeing the scene.
Cold Case Breakthrough Came in Late 2025
Police stated that advancements in investigative methods and forensic analysis played a key role in reopening the case. Detectives reportedly uncovered critical new information in late 2025, leading them to focus on Talbert.
Investigators later coordinated with law enforcement agencies in Washington state before making the arrest. Talbert is currently being held without bail while awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
Officials confirmed he faces two counts of first-degree murder along with a robbery-related charge involving a dangerous weapon.
Families Finally Receive Long-Awaited Answers
The arrest has brought emotional relief to the families of the victims after nearly 18 years without closure. Community members in Concord had long remembered the killings as the “Sun Drop Murders,” a case that generated hundreds of tips over the years but remained unsolved.
Police said the investigation is still active and additional details have not yet been released in order to protect the integrity of the case.
