Suspect Arrested in Germany in High-Profile Madrid Murder Case

Spanish and German law enforcement have detained a suspect in the killing of former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov, authorities announced Wednesday. The arrest took place in the German town of Heinsberg following a coordinated operation between Spain’s National Police and Germany’s Federal Criminal Police force.

Portnov, once a senior aide to ex-Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, was fatally shot outside a private school in the affluent suburb of Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, in May 2025. The former official was killed shortly after dropping off his children, sending shockwaves through local residents and prompting an extensive cross-border investigation.

Joint International Law Enforcement Effort Leads to Arrest

The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly revealed, was taken into custody in Heinsberg as part of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Spanish authorities. Police allege the individual was directly involved in the May 2025 shooting, which occurred near the entrance of the American School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, a well-to-do Madrid neighborhood.

The operation underscores intensive police cooperation between Spanish and German agencies, including efforts to execute a European Investigation Order to search the suspect’s residence as part of ongoing inquiries into the murder.

Background on Andriy Portnov and the Madrid Attack

Andriy Portnov, 51, was a controversial figure in Ukrainian politics who served as a top aide and deputy head of the presidential administration under pro-Russian leader Viktor Yanukovych. After leaving Ukraine following the 2014 Maidan revolution, Portnov lived abroad and faced various legal and political controversies, including sanctions linked to alleged manipulation of judicial systems.

The fatal shooting outside the school’s gates on May 21, 2025 drew international attention due to its brazen nature and the high profile of the victim. In the year since the killing, investigators have worked to unravel the motives and identify all individuals responsible, with authorities cautiously exploring possible political or criminal links.
