EU High Representative Kaja Kallas Reminds U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz of the Critical Value of Transatlantic Alliances
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has issued a pointed reminder to U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz regarding the strategic necessity of American alliances. In a recent statement addressing the dynamics of global conflict, Kallas drew a sharp contrast between the operational realities faced by Russia and the United States, emphasizing the support Washington receives from its partners.
Kallas observed that Moscow’s military aggressions are characterized by isolation, stating, “When Russia goes to war, they go alone because they don’t have allies.” This remark highlights the geopolitical solitude of the Kremlin, which lacks the robust network of mutual defense pacts that characterizes Western security architecture.
Turning her focus to the transatlantic relationship, the former Estonian Prime Minister underscored the historical commitment of European nations to American-led military operations. She reminded Waltz that U.S. interventions rarely occur in a vacuum, noting, “When America goes to wars, a lot of us go with you, and we lose our people along the way.”
This statement serves as a reference to the shared sacrifices made by NATO allies and partner nations in various conflicts over the past decades, including operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East, where European forces have fought and sustained casualties alongside American troops.
Kallas concluded her message with a direct appeal to the practical interests of the United States, asserting, “You also need us.” The comments come at a time of evolving discussions concerning burden-sharing within NATO and the future of U.S. foreign policy, serving as a reaffirmation that the security partnership provides mutual benefits rather than acting solely as a dependency.
