Terrifying Long-Term Captivity Ends in Court Conviction
A British mother of ten has been found guilty of multiple offences after keeping a vulnerable woman locked inside her home and forcing her into domestic labour for more than two decades. The victim, who had learning difficulties, was taken in as a teenager and spent the majority of her adult life living under cruel and controlling conditions before finally being rescued in 2021.
Deprived of Freedom, Forced to Work Without Pay
During a trial at Gloucester Crown Court, jurors heard that the woman was brought into the household as a minor and was never allowed to live a normal life. Instead, she was coerced into performing continuous chores, caring for the children, and cleaning the property without pay or autonomy. Authorities described her treatment as “unimaginable cruelty,” with restrictions placed on her movement and basic personal care.
Prosecutors detailed shocking scenes of abuse, including times when the victim was beaten, forced into gruelling labour for hours on her knees, and given only leftovers to eat. She was also prohibited from washing herself while being compelled to bathe others in the household.
Rescue, Recovery and Pending Sentencing
The long-running exploitation only came to light in 2021 when the victim managed to contact someone she knew using a hidden phone. Police responding to the report found her in a severely malnourished and unhealthy state, without proper dental care or access to medical treatment for years.
The former caregiver was convicted of several charges, including forced labour, false imprisonment, and assault. She has denied the allegations but is scheduled to be sentenced in March. Since her rescue, the victim has been placed in supportive care and is rebuilding her life after enduring decades of neglect and abuse.
