An alarming attack in the heart of Manhattan’s landmark area has left one young man with facial injuries and the city’s police force scrambling for help from the public. Around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, an 18-year-old walking near the 3 Times Square building on Seventh Avenue and West 43rd Street was approached by a stranger who asked if he belonged to a gang — and then, without warning, slashed him across the face, according to law-enforcement sources. The victim was quickly taken to hospital and is now in stable condition.

Stranger’s Question Precedes Sudden Attack

Surveillance footage released by investigators shows the suspect, a person with long dreadlocks, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a red backpack, walking in the area just before the assault took place. Police say the attacker confronted the teen, asked if he was affiliated with a gang, and then used a “cutting instrument” to strike him — though it remains unclear whether the victim had time to respond before the assault.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact the crime tips hotline or submit information online.

Victim’s Condition & Safety Concerns for Midtown Tourists

After the slashing, the teen was transported to a nearby hospital—Mount Sinai West—where he remains in stable condition. While the victim is expected to recover, the incident raises fresh concerns about safety in Midtown Manhattan’s heavily trafficked tourist districts late at night.
With a high-profile location like Times Square, bustling with visitors and locals alike, the question of heightened patrols and preventive measures has resurfaced.
