A convicted child-killer serving a life sentence has been discovered dead in his cell at the maximum-security HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire, prompting a full homicide investigation. The 33-year-old man, who had received a minimum tariff of 28 years for the brutal 2020 murder of his two-year-old stepdaughter, was found by prison staff during a routine check. Three fellow inmates have been arrested in connection with his death.

Step-father’s life sentence for toddler’s murder

In July 2020, the perpetrator entered the family home in Pembrokeshire and attacked his partner’s two-year-old daughter, inflicting more than 100 separate injuries—including a catastrophic brain trauma—that a court likened to those seen in high-speed car-crash victims.
After a trial at Swansea Crown Court, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years in April 2023.
His victim’s mother was also convicted of allowing or causing the child’s death and received a six-year sentence.

Rising scrutiny on prison security and protections

The case comes amid increased concerns about safety within Category A institutions. A recent inspection of HMP Wakefield described the establishment as “under strain” with multiple high-profile inmate deaths in recent months. ITVX
Officials say the Prison Service is assisting the police and cannot comment further while enquiries continue. The outcome of the investigation may prompt renewed calls for reforms in how violent offenders are managed behind bars.
