Tony Allen — the tenacious guard whose defensive tenacity defined the “Grit & Grind” era in Memphis — now faces legal trouble. The former Grizzlies standout was arrested during a traffic stop in Poinsett County, Arkansas, after authorities say they discovered both marijuana and a cocaine-like substance in the vehicle. Allen, 43, is now confronting drug-possession charges that threaten to overshadow his celebrated NBA career.
Traffic stop leads to major revelations
On Wednesday afternoon, deputies pulled a vehicle over along Interstate 555 in Poinsett County with Allen riding as a passenger. Officials say the driver was identified as William Hatton, 33, of Memphis. A strong odour of marijuana reportedly prompted the officers to search the car and Allen’s person. According to the report, deputies found a package of weed in Allen’s possession and a cigarette-box hidden in the passenger area containing a white powder later identified as cocaine. As a result, Allen is charged with possession of less than 2 grams of a Schedule 1 or 2 drug (cocaine or meth) and under 4 ounces of marijuana. Hatton also faces charges for possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane change. ESPN+2KATV+2
