Life Sentences for Convicted Murderer After Major Jail Break
The New Orleans courtroom was the scene of a stern ruling Friday as a judge handed down two life sentences to a 28-year-old man who remained free for nearly five months after a mass jail escape. The inmate, who had been on the run since breaking out of custody in May, was found hiding beneath a house in Atlanta and brought back into custody months later.
He had previously been convicted of two counts of second-degree murder for killings that occurred during a 2018 shooting at a Mardi Gras party. In addition to the life terms for the murders, the judge also imposed two 50-year sentences for attempted murder charges tied to that same violent episode.
🚨 Historic Jail Escape Triggered Extensive Manhunt
In mid-May 2025, ten inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison by squeezing through a hole in a cell wall and scaling a fence under cover of darkness — one of the most significant jailbreaks in recent U.S. history.
The breakout prompted a widespread search by multiple law enforcement agencies, with all escapees eventually recaptured. The defendant in this case was the final fugitive to be taken back into custody.
During sentencing, the judge criticized the defendant’s conduct both during the original crimes and while a fugitive, noting his lack of remorse and the disruption his escape caused in the community and legal system.
⚖️ Courtroom Drama and Victim Impact
Family members of the murder victims spoke during proceedings, expressing the deep and lasting impact of the violence on their lives. The judge described the defendant’s actions — both past and during the jailbreak — as further harm done to families already grieving.
Defense attorneys signaled plans to appeal the convictions, asserting their client maintains innocence, but the court emphasized the severity of the crimes and the need for accountability.
