Illinois Mother Faces Murder Charges in Toddler’s Death

An Illinois mother has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son at a home in Frankfort, Illinois.

Corie A. Walsh, 40, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder following the death of her son, Barrett Walsh, according to court records. The toddler, who was also known as “Bear,” was found unresponsive inside the family’s home on Tuesday afternoon.

Frankfort police were called to a residence on Brook Stone Court shortly after 4 p.m. after receiving a report involving an injured child. A neighbor was reportedly performing CPR on Barrett when officers arrived.

Authorities said the child was found in the basement and was later taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors allege that Walsh later told officers she had killed her son because she believed he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.”

Police Also Found Mother With Self-Inflicted Injuries

After locating the child, officers found Walsh upstairs in a bathtub with injuries that authorities believe were self-inflicted.

She was transported to a hospital for treatment, and officials described her injuries as non-life-threatening. Walsh remains in custody while receiving medical care.

Investigators have also been examining what happened in the hours leading up to the toddler’s death.

According to prosecutors, Walsh had recently become deeply interested in the murder case involving Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy. She was reportedly discussing the case with friends through a group text message just hours before Barrett was found.

The Lindsay Clancy case has received widespread attention because Clancy was accused of killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. She was later accused of attempting suicide by jumping from a second-story window.

Attorney Says Walsh Experienced a Psychotic Episode

Walsh’s attorney has said the mother was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the incident.

In a statement, the attorney described the death as a devastating tragedy for the Walsh family and said the family was mourning the loss of the child.

Authorities said other children were present in the home around the time of the incident but were not physically injured. Walsh’s husband was reportedly out of state when the incident occurred.

The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors are continuing to examine evidence surrounding Barrett’s death and Walsh’s actions.

Meanwhile, Walsh remains in custody and is expected to face further court proceedings as the criminal case moves forward.

The allegations against Walsh have not been proven in court, and she is presumed innocent unless found guilty.
