Barry Morphew, the Colorado man facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his wife Suzanne Morphew, has been taken into custody again after authorities alleged he violated the conditions of his $3 million bond.
Morphew, 58, was arrested Thursday night, Sept. 3, after an outstanding warrant was issued in Alamosa County. His latest legal trouble follows an alleged hit-and-run in Denver and a trip to Denver International Airport that prosecutors say was not permitted under his release conditions.
Morphew Accused of Violating Strict Bond Conditions
Morphew was released on a $3 million bond while awaiting trial in the case involving his wife’s death. His release included GPS monitoring and restrictions on where he could travel.
Under the conditions, Morphew was generally required to remain at home and could leave for limited reasons, including work, medical needs, court appearances and meetings with his legal team.
Prosecutors say GPS information showed that Morphew traveled from his home in southern Colorado to Denver International Airport on Aug. 28. According to court filings, he left home around 10 a.m., reached the airport at approximately 11:45 a.m. and then departed shortly afterward.
His attorney reportedly indicated that Morphew may have gone to the airport to pick up his daughter rather than for work. Prosecutors argued that such a trip would still violate the terms of his bond.
Alleged Denver Hit-and-Run Adds to Legal Troubles
The airport trip became more significant after authorities reviewed an alleged traffic incident in Denver involving Morphew.
According to a court order, Morphew was allegedly driving aggressively before striking two vehicles. A witness reportedly recorded part of the interaction following the collision.
The court document alleges that Morphew did not provide his name or identification and said he did not have insurance. He reportedly offered the other driver $300 to cover the damage.
When the driver declined the cash and said police were being contacted, Morphew allegedly left the scene. The court order states that he nearly struck another person while leaving and drove over a curb.
A judge subsequently ordered Morphew to remain under full-time house arrest while the court considered the alleged violation. The judge also noted that the incident could potentially involve criminal conduct, although Morphew had not been charged locally over the traffic incident at the time of the order.
Murder Case Against Morphew Remains Pending
The latest arrest comes as Morphew continues to face a first-degree murder case involving Suzanne Morphew.
Suzanne disappeared during a bike ride near the couple’s Salida, Colorado, home on Mother’s Day in May 2020. Her remains were discovered in 2023, roughly three years after she went missing, in a shallow grave less than an hour from the family’s former home.
Morphew was charged with first-degree murder in 2025. He has pleaded not guilty and has denied involvement in his wife’s death.
The case is scheduled to proceed to trial in 2027. Meanwhile, prosecutors are seeking changes to the conditions of Morphew’s release following the alleged bond violations.
A bond hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8, when the court is expected to consider the allegations and determine what restrictions should remain in place.
