New details have emerged in the investigation into the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four whose body was discovered hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 3, 2026.
During a preliminary hearing on Friday, Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes testified that investigators believe Fortune was already dead before her body was placed in the tree. According to the detective, the scene was staged after an apparent dispute involving drugs.
Authorities have classified Fortune’s death as a homicide. The circumstances surrounding the killing have drawn significant attention because of the location and the way her body was discovered.
Detective Says Fortune Was Killed Before Body Was Hung
Dukes told the court that investigators believe Fortune became involved in a dispute over drugs and was killed during the confrontation. He also said interviews indicated that Fortune fought intensely before her death.
The detective cited the medical examiner’s findings in describing the hanging as staged. Authorities, however, have not publicly disclosed the precise cause of Fortune’s death or explained why investigators believe her body was later placed in the tree.
The discovery of Fortune’s body brought renewed attention to Mississippi’s history of racial violence and lynchings. Fortune was Black, and the circumstances surrounding the discovery prompted concern and widespread public interest.
Police have continued investigating whether additional people were involved in the killing.
Two Men Arrested as Investigation Continues
Jarques Ratliff, 51, was arrested earlier this month and charged with murder. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond.
During Friday’s court hearing, Ratliff said that Fortune had been a friend of his. His family has maintained that he was not responsible for her death.
Police also arrested 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr. this week and charged him with murder. Authorities have additionally issued a warrant for another person in connection with the investigation.
The preliminary hearing involving Ratliff is scheduled to continue on September 30. The proceeding is intended to determine whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence to present the case to a grand jury for a possible indictment.
Family Seeks Answers in Tasia Fortune Case
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, has continued to seek answers about what happened to her daughter. She said outside court that she was not surprised by testimony indicating Fortune had fought before she died.
Spivey has described her daughter as a mother of four who had experienced homelessness in recent years. She said Fortune had been talking about starting a cleaning business and was attempting to rebuild her life.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released a complete account of what happened before Fortune’s death or why her body was placed in the tree.
