More than 30 years after a 64-year-old grandmother was found dead inside her fire-damaged home, police in North Wales have made four new arrests as part of a continuing investigation.
Doreen Morris was discovered inside her burned-out bungalow near Holyhead in March 1994. Her death remained surrounded by unanswered questions for decades, but a renewed police review has now resulted in fresh developments in the long-running case.
The four people arrested include one man and three women from North Wales. Authorities are continuing their investigation.
New Developments in 1994 Unsolved Death Investigation
Morris died at her home during the early hours of March 25, 1994. Her body was found after a fire severely damaged the property.
Investigators later determined that she had died before the blaze began. A previous investigation resulted in Joseph Carl Westbury being charged with her murder, but he was found not guilty in 1995. He had also denied breaking into Morris’ home. Westbury died in 2016.
For many years, the case remained unresolved, while Morris’ family continued to seek answers about her death.
Inquest Confirmed Unlawful Killing
A formal inquest held in 2023 examined the circumstances surrounding Morris’ death and concluded that she had been unlawfully killed.
Evidence presented during the proceedings indicated that Morris suffered traumatic injuries, including injuries believed to have been caused by a fork.
The findings brought renewed attention to the decades-old murder case and helped lead to a further review of the evidence.
Police Review Leads to Four Arrests
North Wales Police’s Major Crime Review Team began examining the case again in 2024.
Police said advances in forensic work, along with a detailed reassessment of witness evidence, provided grounds to question four individuals. A man and three women were arrested on September 2, 2026, on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
The identities of those arrested have not been publicly released.
Police said Morris’ family has been informed about the latest developments. The investigation remains ongoing as officers continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.
