Polish authorities have detained a Ukrainian national accused of attempting to assassinate a representative of Ukraine’s defense industry in an alleged operation directed by Russian intelligence services. Investigators say the suspect planted an explosive device beneath a vehicle used by the intended target near Kyiv, but the planned attack failed when the device malfunctioned.
Suspect Accused of Planting Explosive Under Vehicle
The suspect, identified under Polish privacy rules as Serhii P., allegedly targeted a Ukrainian arms industry representative in Irpin, a town near Kyiv.
According to Poland’s Internal Security Agency, investigators believe the man placed an improvised explosive device beneath a vehicle associated with the intended victim. The device was reportedly designed to be activated remotely through a mobile phone.
However, the mechanism failed to detonate, preventing the suspected assassination attempt from being carried out.
Following the unsuccessful attack, investigators say the suspect left Ukraine and traveled to Poland. He was subsequently arrested in Warsaw.
Polish Prosecutors File Serious Charges
Polish prosecutors have charged the Ukrainian national with attempted murder involving explosives as well as the unlawful possession of explosives.
If convicted, he could face a minimum prison sentence of 15 years, with prosecutors saying the charges also carry the possibility of life imprisonment.
Authorities have characterized the case as another example of alleged Russian intelligence activity extending beyond national borders. Poland’s security agency said such operations can involve individuals moving between different countries to carry out assignments.
The allegations have not been independently established in court, and the Russian government has repeatedly rejected accusations that it directs sabotage, espionage or assassination operations in Europe.
Poland Faces Growing Security Concerns
The arrest comes amid heightened concerns in Poland and elsewhere in Europe over alleged Russian intelligence operations connected to the war in Ukraine.
Polish authorities have recently announced other cases involving alleged Russian-backed assassination and sabotage activities. Earlier in August, Poland detained a Russian citizen accused of being recruited by Moscow to target a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s key supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Its geographic position on NATO’s eastern flank and its role as a major transit route for assistance to Ukraine have made the country particularly sensitive to potential espionage and sabotage threats.
The latest case is expected to add to concerns among Polish and European security agencies about alleged attempts to use intermediaries and foreign nationals for covert operations connected to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
