Thailand Schools Practice Emergency Response After Deadly Shooting

Schools across Thailand are introducing active-shooter response exercises as authorities strengthen security following a deadly attack at a school earlier this month. The measures are designed to help students and teachers react quickly if they face an armed attacker.

At Surasamontree School in Bangkok, students participated in a simulated emergency exercise based on the “run, hide, fight” approach. A police officer played the role of an attacker while using blank ammunition during the training.

Students practiced escaping from danger, hiding beneath tables and behind secured doors, and using classroom furniture to block entrances. One part of the exercise also showed students attempting to restrain the simulated attacker after he entered a classroom.

Education Ministry Orders Schools to Improve Security Plans

The drills were introduced after Thailand’s Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong issued a directive on August 10 requiring schools to establish security plans and regularly rehearse emergency procedures.

The order came about two weeks after a 14-year-old opened fire at a school, killing at least eight people. The incident has increased concerns about school safety and the need for students and staff to understand how to respond during violent emergencies.

Police are also supporting schools with security training. Officials said schools are reviewing their emergency procedures and preparing for different types of potential threats.

Schools Increase Daily Security Checks

Along with emergency drills, some schools have tightened everyday security measures. Surasamontree School has increased the use of metal detectors and bag inspections as part of its efforts to prevent dangerous items from entering the campus.

Police officers have demonstrated security procedures, while school staff have shown items that were confiscated during inspections.

School officials said the training is intended to give students greater awareness and practical knowledge that could help them respond during a real emergency.

The expanded security measures reflect a broader effort by Thai authorities and schools to improve preparedness and reassure students, teachers and families following the recent deadly school attack.
