Israel Admits Troops Fired on Car Carrying Hind Rajab as Criminal Investigation Opens download 2

The Israeli military has acknowledged that its soldiers opened fire on a vehicle carrying five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab and members of her family during fighting in Gaza in January 2024. The admission marks a reversal of earlier claims that Israeli forces were not operating in the area and has renewed calls for accountability over the deaths of civilians and emergency responders.

Hind Rajab Was Trapped in the Car After Her Family Was Killed

Hind Rajab was travelling with six members of her family as they attempted to leave an area of Gaza City during an Israeli military operation on January 29, 2024. The vehicle came under heavy gunfire, killing several passengers.

Hind survived the initial attack and remained inside the damaged car surrounded by the bodies of her relatives. She later spoke by telephone with the Palestine Red Crescent Society, asking for help as emergency workers tried to arrange a rescue.

The child remained in contact with responders for several hours before communications were lost. A Red Crescent ambulance sent to reach her was also attacked, killing two paramedics.

The bodies of Hind, her relatives and the two rescuers were discovered days later.

Israeli Military Reverses Earlier Position

The Israeli military had previously said its forces were not operating close to the location of the incident. However, a subsequent review concluded that Israeli troops had fired on the vehicle.

The military has now ordered a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The decision represents a significant change in the official account of the Hind Rajab case, which has become one of the most widely known incidents involving Palestinian civilians during the Gaza war.

The case has attracted international attention because of the recordings of Hind’s calls for help and investigations that examined the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Investigation Raises Wider Questions About Accountability

The Hind Rajab case is among several incidents involving civilian and emergency-worker deaths that have faced renewed scrutiny. The Israeli military has also announced a criminal investigation into the deaths of Palestinian medical workers during a separate incident in Gaza in 2025.

However, rights organizations and families of victims have questioned whether internal Israeli military investigations can provide meaningful accountability. They have called for independent investigations into alleged violations during the conflict.

The latest admission is therefore likely to intensify international attention on the conduct of Israeli forces in Gaza and the question of whether those responsible for civilian deaths will face prosecution.
