Ukraine Faces Fresh Political Pressure as Corruption Probe Deepens and Fedorov Calls for Wartime Elections GDFBL2m1e5 O6WJLm xWQWEgNSH8o7Ub3eahbq8e Teu3cnAxfBhyh5LUxGm4fc9FLtHam4NXsYyqcVdxxfGTOwnYPHtZhZ6fNEXcxht2JuyVDyErYznE9v5oFlLBaHDKMsEF xZ

Ukraine is facing a fresh political challenge as anti-corruption investigators launch an operation involving senior officials linked to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration, while former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for elections despite the country remaining under martial law.

The developments come at a sensitive moment for Zelenskyy, following a major government reshuffle and growing debate over corruption, democratic accountability and the future direction of Ukraine’s wartime leadership.

Anti-Corruption Probe Targets Senior Officials

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office announced an investigation into an alleged criminal organisation involving current and former lawmakers as well as senior figures within the presidential administration.

The agencies said the operation was focused on allegations involving high-level political figures and promised to provide additional information as the investigation progresses.

Zelenskyy also dismissed Iryna Mudra, a deputy head of his presidential office, on Wednesday. Ukrainian media reported that investigators had searched locations connected to Mudra and lawmaker Vadym Stolar, although authorities did not immediately establish a direct public link between Mudra’s dismissal and the investigation.

The latest case adds to continued concerns over corruption in Ukraine, an issue that has also been closely watched by European partners as Kyiv pursues closer integration with the European Union.

Fedorov Calls for Elections During Wartime

The political pressure increased after former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov publicly urged Ukraine to find a way to hold elections despite the ongoing war.

Fedorov, a former close ally of Zelenskyy, argued that Ukraine needs a mechanism that would allow democratic processes to continue even during a prolonged conflict. He also criticised corruption and what he described as weaknesses within the country’s system of governance.

His intervention represents a significant political challenge because Ukraine remains under martial law, under which elections cannot currently be conducted under existing legal arrangements.

Fedorov was removed as defence minister in July after only several months in the position. His dismissal triggered public protests, while his disagreements with senior military leadership had already become increasingly visible.

Zelenskyy Faces Pressure as War Continues

The latest political developments come as Ukraine remains locked in its long-running war with Russia. Russian attacks continue to cause civilian casualties, while Kyiv has maintained its own campaign of strikes against Russian military and infrastructure targets.

At the same time, Zelenskyy is attempting to strengthen his government following recent cabinet changes. Parliament has approved new ministerial appointments, including Yevhenii Khmara as defence minister and Andrii Sybiha as foreign minister.

The combination of a new corruption investigation, calls for wartime elections and continuing military pressure puts renewed focus on Ukraine’s political stability. For Zelenskyy, maintaining public confidence while managing the war and meeting expectations from European allies remains a major challenge.
