Tragedy Strikes Chico Library as Gunfire Leaves Two Dead
A shooting inside a public library in Chico, Northern California, on Monday evening claimed the lives of two adults and left a child with minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that the suspected gunman was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Emergency crews responded after multiple distress calls reported gunshots and screams coming from the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. Officers entered the building within minutes as frightened visitors and staff sought safety.
Police Capture Suspect After Attempted Escape
According to local authorities, the suspect fled through the rear of the building as officers entered from the front. Law enforcement personnel positioned outside quickly intercepted and arrested the individual without further violence.
Investigators believe the suspect acted alone. Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect or provided information about a possible motive. The names of the victims are also being withheld until family members are notified.
Child Hospitalized, Community Shaken by Incident
A child suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police said there is no continuing danger to the public.
Roads around the library were temporarily closed while investigators processed the scene, and a reunification center was established for people who had been inside the building during the attack.
County officials announced that all Butte County library branches would remain closed Tuesday and offered condolences to the victims, their families, library employees, and everyone affected by the tragedy.
