Trump Rejects Khamenei’s Son as Iran’s Next Leader, Seeks Role in Choosing Successor

Iran War

The debate over Iran’s future leadership intensified after former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he wants the United States to play a role in the selection of the country’s next Supreme Leader. Trump strongly criticized the possibility of Mojtaba Khamenei — the son of the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — taking over the position, calling the idea unacceptable. The remarks come during a critical period as Iran’s religious and political establishment works to decide who will lead the country after the death of its longtime supreme authority.

Trump Calls Khamenei’s Son “Unacceptable”

In recent comments, Trump openly opposed the potential rise of Mojtaba Khamenei to the highest leadership position in Iran. He reportedly described the possibility of a hereditary succession as unacceptable and suggested that Iran needs leadership capable of bringing stability and peace to the region.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric with strong ties to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard and conservative religious circles, has been widely mentioned as one of the likely candidates to succeed his father. However, his potential leadership has sparked debate both inside and outside Iran, with critics warning it could resemble a dynastic transfer of power.

Trump Wants U.S. Involvement in Iran’s Leadership Choice

Trump also suggested that Washington should have influence over the selection of Iran’s next Supreme Leader. He argued that the United States must be involved to ensure that the future leadership does not lead the country toward further conflict or nuclear escalation.

According to his remarks, any new Iranian leader would need to maintain a relationship that prevents future military confrontations with the United States. Trump warned that without such assurances, the situation could return to crisis in the coming years.

Iran Rejects Foreign Interference in Leadership Decision

Iranian officials have firmly rejected the idea of outside involvement in their internal political process. Senior leaders emphasized that choosing the country’s Supreme Leader is solely the responsibility of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, a body of senior clerics tasked with selecting the nation’s highest authority.

Reports suggest the council has already reached a consensus on a successor, though the name of the next Supreme Leader has not yet been publicly confirmed.

The controversy surrounding Trump’s remarks highlights the deep geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, especially during a period of uncertainty about the future direction of the Iranian government.
