PORTLAND, Oregon — A 56-year-old church minister died in December after being shot in his Portland home more than a month earlier while trying to protect his 4-year-old grandson during a violent late-night invasion, police said. Authorities have now charged five teenage suspects with murder and multiple other felonies in connection with the case.
Minister Shot in Front of Family During Break-In
Police say officers responded to a shooting just after 12:30 a.m. on November 1 on Southeast Ramona Street where they found the injured man with multiple gunshot wounds. The minister, a devoted grandfather and local church leader, was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his wounds on December 12. Investigators determined that a group of teens forced their way into the residence and opened fire in front of family members.
Five Teens Face Murder and Felony Charges
Law enforcement identified and charged five teens in connection with the case. Two suspects arrested in early November are facing first-degree murder charges along with counts of assault, burglary, unlawful weapon use and other felonies. Three additional teens — including two adults and one juvenile — were later charged with second-degree murder, burglary and related offences. All remain in custody as the case proceeds.
Community Reacts to Rising Youth Violence
Local police and prosecutors voiced deep sorrow over the loss and emphasized the broader issue of violence among youth and young adults. Authorities hope that the arrests and forthcoming legal actions will help deliver justice for the victim’s family and deter future incidents. Investigators continue to follow leads and ask anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
