Katen Atwell Identified in Fatal Shooting Incident
ELIZABETHTOWN, KY — A Kentucky community is in mourning after a 15-year-old girl was shot and killed early Sunday morning outside a Lowe’s parking lot in Elizabethtown. The victim, later identified as Katen Atwell, died of a gunshot wound to the chest following the incident around 2:30 a.m., authorities say.
What Happened: Social Media Meet-Up Ends in Tragedy
Police were dispatched to the Lowe’s off Ring Road after reports of a shooting involving a teenage girl. When officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Bryan Harbison performing CPR on Atwell. Paramedics rushed the girl to Baptist Health Hardin, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe Harbison met Atwell and another 15-year-old girl through Snapchat, under the impression that both were adults. Authorities say he supplied alcohol to the teens before driving them to the parking lot to hang out.
Shooting, Arrests and Charges
According to police accounts, the other 15-year-old at the scene admitted picking up a handgun found inside Harbison’s vehicle and firing a single shot that struck Atwell. The suspect told investigators the firearm was placed on the vehicle’s console and was thought to be unloaded. Harbison offered a different account, stating the gun had been stored in his glove compartment.
The teenage suspect has been arrested and charged with murder. Harbison has also been charged with unlawful transaction with a minor and wanton endangerment. He pleaded not guilty in court, where a judge set his bond at $10,000.
Community Reaction and Family Grief
Hardin County Schools issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Atwell, noting her involvement in the virtual school program and the profound impact her death has had on classmates, teachers, and family members. Community members have rallied to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
