Court Rules to Keep Bar Owner in Custody
A Swiss court has ruled that the co-owner of a bar where a devastating New Year’s fire claimed the lives of 40 people must remain in custody as legal proceedings continue. The judge’s decision, announced Monday, extends the detention of Jacques Moretti for a provisional three-month period due to concerns he may try to evade justice, according to authorities.
The blaze broke out at Le Constellation in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana on January 1, prompting one of the deadliest fire disasters in recent Swiss history.
Legal Conditions and Potential Release Terms
Under the court’s ruling, Moretti will remain in custody until at least March 2026, unless conditions that address the perceived flight risk — such as posting a substantial security deposit — are met. Prosecutors in the Valais canton initially ordered his detention following a detailed hearing with him and his co-owner wife, Jessica Moretti.
Lawyers for Jessica Moretti said the couple has pledged not to flee and expressed hope that required conditions for Jacques Moretti’s release could soon be satisfied, allowing him temporary freedom pending trial.
Ongoing Investigation Into Deadly Fire
The fire at the popular bar has sparked a criminal investigation into possible negligence and safety failures. Authorities believe the blaze may have been triggered when celebratory sparklers ignited flammable materials on the ceiling, rapidly engulfing the basement venue and trapping patrons. Emergency responders treated more than 100 injured people, many with severe burns.
Swiss officials and community leaders continue to grapple with the tragedy, which has prompted broader scrutiny of fire safety enforcement across hospitality venues nationwide. Memorials and tributes have been held in honor of the victims as the legal process moves forward.
