Spanish authorities have uncovered and shut down a sophisticated drug trafficking network that used helicopters to transport hashish from Morocco into southern Spain. The operation led to multiple arrests, the seizure of a helicopter, large amounts of cannabis resin, firearms, and vehicles. Investigators say the gang used remote landing areas to avoid detection before distributing the drugs across Europe.
Helicopters Used for Cross-Border Drug Runs
According to police, the criminal group relied on light helicopters capable of carrying several hundred kilograms of hashish per flight. These aircraft were flown from northern Morocco across the Mediterranean to isolated rural zones in southern Spain. Once landed, the drugs were quickly unloaded and hidden in warehouses and farms to reduce the risk of interception.
Authorities noted that while sea routes remain the most common method for smuggling drugs into Spain, the use of helicopters shows how trafficking groups are constantly adapting their tactics.
Major Seizures and Arrests in Southern Spain
During coordinated raids in the provinces of Málaga, Almería, and Murcia, officers arrested six suspects believed to be key members of the organization. Police also seized around 650 kilograms of hashish, a helicopter used in the operation, several firearms, cash, and multiple vehicles.
Investigators believe the network was well-organized and had access to significant financial resources, allowing it to operate expensive aircraft and move drugs onward to other European countries by road.

International Cooperation and Ongoing Investigations
The crackdown was carried out with support from international law enforcement partners, highlighting the cross-border nature of drug trafficking networks operating between North Africa and Europe. Spanish police say investigations are ongoing, and further arrests have not been ruled out.
Officials stressed that Spain’s proximity to Morocco makes it a key entry point for cannabis resin entering Europe, prompting authorities to remain alert to new and unconventional smuggling methods.
