Salvadoran National Arrested After Alleged Sexual Assault on Uber Driver Leads to Crash in Miami
Authorities in Miami, Florida, have arrested 26-year-old Oscar Ernesto Sanchez-Aguire, an undocumented national from El Salvador, following a violent incident in the Little Havana neighborhood that resulted in a serious vehicle collision. Sanchez-Aguire is accused of sexually assaulting a female Uber driver while the vehicle was in motion, causing her to lose control and crash into a building.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 31, 2026. According to the arrest affidavit, the driver picked up Sanchez-Aguire shortly before 2:00 a.m. The situation escalated when the passenger allegedly directed the driver to turn down a dark street. Police reports state that Sanchez-Aguire then covered the woman’s mouth and began to violently grope her.
During the struggle, the driver lost control of her SUV, striking another vehicle before slamming into the wall of a church. A witness at the scene described seeing the driver trapped inside the wreckage, screaming, “He tried to rape me, he tried to touch me, abuse me.” The suspect reportedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by police shortly after, as he had left his cell phone inside the victim’s vehicle.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that Sanchez-Aguire is in the United States illegally and has lodged a formal detainer against him. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement regarding the arrest, linking the incident to broader immigration enforcement issues. “This is yet another example of how years of open border policies have resulted in a heartbreaking number of preventable attacks. This monster should never have been in our country in the first place,” McLaughlin stated.
Sanchez-Aguire has been charged with battery and culpable negligence resulting in injuries. While the accusations are severe, the legal process is in its early stages, and the suspect retains the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law. He remains in custody as local authorities and federal immigration officials coordinate on his detention status.
This case adds to ongoing scrutiny regarding passenger and driver safety in the ride-share industry. Uber has previously stated that it cooperates fully with law enforcement in such investigations and maintains a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct by either riders or drivers. The condition of the driver, who suffered injuries in the crash, has not been publicly updated beyond initial reports of her distress at the scene.
