Records Reveal Driver in Fatal Pilot Point Cyclist Crash Was Unlicensed
A newly released state crash report confirms that the 23-year-old driver involved in the fatal collision with two cyclists in Pilot Point was operating the vehicle without a driver’s license. The incident, which occurred on December 20 along FM 455, resulted in the deaths of Andre Kocher and Scott Mages, two prominent members of the Frisco Triathlon Club. According to documents reviewed by the Texas Department of Transportation, the driver possessed only a Texas state identification card at the time of the tragedy.
Investigators allege the driver was speeding and distracted when his pickup truck struck the cyclists in the eastbound lane. While authorities noted that the driver initially left the immediate vicinity, he reportedly told officials he believed he had struck an animal before returning to the scene. The report further indicates that the driver refused alcohol and drug testing following the collision.
The stretch of FM 455 where the crash occurred is a well-traveled route for North Texas cycling groups, though it has faced scrutiny for its narrow lanes and high-speed traffic. Kocher and Mages were participating in a scheduled group ride when they were thrown from their bicycles. As the Pilot Point Police Department continues its investigation, no formal charges have been publicly announced, and the specific factors contributing to the driver’s alleged distraction remain under review.
