Historic Snowball Fight Leads to Arrest Amid Winter Storm Chaos
NEW YORK CITY — New York City police arrested a 27-year-old man Thursday in connection with a massive snowball confrontation that left several officers injured earlier this week in Manhattan’s Washington Square Park. The incident erupted during a winter storm as a large crowd gathered for what began as a social media-driven snowball event.
Video footage from Monday shows uniformed NYPD officers walking through the park as snowballs filled with ice were hurled from all directions, striking officers in the face and head. At least two officers were treated at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the clash, according to law enforcement sources.
Police described the scene as chaotic and launched an investigation that led to Thursday’s arrest, with officials charging the suspect with assaulting police.
Officers Targeted in Viral Snowball Skirmish
The large group that assembled appeared to have been organized through social media, drawing dozens of participants to the iconic park amid blizzard conditions. Officers responded after a 911 call reporting a disorderly group, only to be met with a barrage of snow and ice projectiles.
Body-worn camera and bystander videos show officers attempting to navigate the path through flying snowballs, at times pushing individuals aside while trying to break up the crowd.
Authorities have released images of several additional people they want to question in connection with the event, but have not yet apprehended them.
Political Reactions and Ongoing Investigation
Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the melee as a “snowball fight that got out of hand,” suggesting the activity was initially playful before degenerating into disorder. His office has declined to comment further on the case.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and the city’s police union condemned the behavior, labeling the attack on officers as unacceptable and criminal. The department says it will pursue charges where appropriate and continue to identify those involved.
As winter weather continues to impact the region following a powerful blizzard that dropped significant snow across the Northeast, city officials are emphasizing public safety and accountability in large public gatherings.
