Iran Denies Role in Suspected Drone Strike on Azerbaijan Airport
Tensions rose in the South Caucasus after an explosion and drone strike were reported at an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region. Azerbaijani officials accused Iran of launching drones that struck airport infrastructure and injured civilians, but Tehran has firmly denied the allegation.
Authorities in Azerbaijan said at least two drones entered the country’s Nakhchivan exclave, hitting an airport terminal area and landing near a school building. The incident caused damage to the airport facility and left several people injured, prompting a strong reaction from the Azerbaijani government.
Iran’s military, however, rejected the claims and stated that its armed forces did not conduct any drone operation targeting Azerbaijan. Iranian officials also suggested that other actors could be responsible for the incident.
Azerbaijan Condemns Attack and Launches Investigation
Officials in Baku strongly condemned the strike and demanded a clear explanation for the incident. According to Azerbaijani authorities, one drone hit the airport terminal in Nakhchivan while another crashed near a nearby school in the village of Shekerabad. The impact damaged infrastructure and injured civilians.
The government said it had summoned the Iranian ambassador to lodge a formal protest and warned that the attack would not go unanswered. Azerbaijani defense officials have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the drones and assess the full extent of the damage.
Security agencies are also reviewing technical evidence and surveillance footage to identify how the drones crossed into the region and whether additional threats remain.
Rising Regional Tensions Add to Security Concerns
The incident comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension across the Middle East and surrounding regions. Analysts warn that any confirmed cross-border attack could further destabilize relations between neighboring countries and create new security challenges.
Azerbaijan maintains strategic partnerships with several Western and regional powers, while Iran has previously expressed concerns about foreign military influence near its borders. These political dynamics have already strained relations between the two countries in recent years.
Experts say the latest airport explosion and drone incident could complicate regional diplomacy and increase security measures across critical infrastructure, including airports and border areas.
