A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has been arrested in Minnesota months after allegedly shooting and injuring a Venezuelan man during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Christian Castro is facing state assault charges and allegations that he falsely reported what happened during the January incident.
The arrest brings renewed attention to the case involving federal immigration officers, a wounded Venezuelan national and an investigation into the agent’s account of the shooting.
ICE Agent Christian Castro Arrested in Minneapolis
Christian Castro, a 52-year-old ICE agent, was taken into custody in Minneapolis on Wednesday, September 16, and booked into Hennepin County Jail.
Minnesota authorities have charged Castro with four felony counts of second-degree assault involving a dangerous weapon. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly falsely reporting a crime.
The charges stem from a January shooting in which Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis was wounded. The incident took place during Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration enforcement campaign in Minnesota.
Castro is expected to appear in Minnesota state court to address the charges.
Shooting Investigation and Alleged False Account
According to investigators, Castro fired through the door of an apartment while children were inside, striking Sosa-Celis. Authorities later questioned the agent’s description of the incident.
Castro allegedly told investigators that he had been attacked. However, video evidence reportedly contradicted parts of his account, leading to allegations that he provided false information about the shooting.
