Three Suspects Held After Fatal Firebomb Attacks in Thessaloniki

Greek counter-terrorism authorities have arrested three people in connection with a series of firebomb attacks that targeted homes associated with the country’s ruling New Democracy party in the northern city of Thessaloniki. The attacks, which took place earlier this month, resulted in the death of a 72-year-old woman and left four others injured.

Investigators believe the suspects were involved in the third and most serious attack, which caused a deadly blaze after incendiary devices were placed outside a residential building.

Fatal Attack Claimed One Life and Injured Four Others

According to officials, attackers used gas canister-based incendiary devices in three separate incidents before dawn. The first two explosions caused property damage but no injuries.

The third attack proved far more devastating. Five people were hurt, including a 72-year-old woman who later died from severe burn injuries. The victim was the mother of a parliamentary candidate representing the governing New Democracy party.

Authorities also reported damage to nearby vehicles during the explosion. While police have linked the three arrested suspects to the fatal incident, they have not released additional information about the investigation or possible motives.

Homes of Ruling Party Figures Were Targeted

Officials said two of the targeted buildings housed residents connected to the New Democracy party, while another property belonged to a local party politician.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Greece has experienced politically motivated bombings and arson attacks for decades, although most incidents in recent years have mainly resulted in property damage rather than fatalities.

The latest arrests mark a significant development in the investigation as security agencies continue working to determine whether additional individuals were involved.

Political Violence Remains a Security Concern

The deadly firebombing has renewed concerns about politically motivated violence in Greece. Government officials have condemned the attacks and reaffirmed their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, with counter-terrorism officers examining evidence and possible links to extremist activity.
