A decades-old mystery has taken a shocking turn on Long Island after a 55-year-old woman recently admitted she killed her infant daughter in 1993 — a case that remained unresolved for more than three decades until her confession. The baby, long referred to as “Baby Jane Doe,” was discovered abandoned and dead along a Calverton roadside in September 1993. Now, law enforcement officials are moving forward with murder charges following the stunning revelation.
Suspect Confesses in Longstanding Cold Case
Authorities say the woman confessed to Suffolk County detectives that she was responsible for the death of her newborn more than 30 years ago. According to court documents, she stated, in essence, “I did it,” acknowledging she caused the infant’s death after the baby would not stop crying. The statement came during an interview on February 2, 2026, and has upended one of the region’s most perplexing unsolved cases.
Infant Found in Bag on Roadside in 1993
The newborn was found in a bag beside a county road in Calverton, New York, on September 27, 1993. At that time, forensic technology, including DNA analysis, was far less advanced, leaving investigators without the tools necessary to identify either the child or her parents. The case went cold as years passed without definitive leads or breakthroughs.
Charges Filed, Court Appearance Pending
Following her confession, the woman was charged with second-degree murder and remains in custody at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Her first scheduled court hearing was postponed, with a new appearance set for March 2. She has not entered a plea, and her legal team has not publicly commented on her confession or the case’s circumstances.
