A Boone County judge has ordered a West Virginia mother to serve 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to child neglect charges tied to the death of her 14-year-old daughter, whose frail body was discovered in their home. The sentence, handed down on February 25, marks a devastating end to a case that has drawn scrutiny over prolonged child abuse and failures in the state’s child protection system.

Daughter Found in Skeletal Condition After Years of Neglect

Officials say deputies responding to a call at a Morrisvale residence in April 2024 found the teenage girl unresponsive on a bathroom floor, her body severely emaciated with an untreated eating disorder and no medical care for at least four years. At the time of her death, she weighed just 58 pounds. Investigators documented that the teen had rarely left the house over the past several years and had not eaten for months, underscoring the extent of her isolation and neglect.

Court Proceedings and Emotional Testimonies

In Boone County Circuit Court, the mother, who pleaded guilty in a November hearing to causing the death of a child by a guardian, received the maximum allowable sentence. The judge emphasized that no child should endure such suffering. During the hearing, the defendant expressed love for her daughter and deep remorse, while family members delivered impact statements about the emotional toll of the loss.

Broader Concerns Prompt Calls for Reform

The tragic death has sparked public attention on gaps in child welfare oversight in West Virginia. A federal audit later revealed shortcomings in how authorities responded to reports of potential abuse, including missed opportunities for intervention. The case has led to discussions on strengthening child protection procedures and oversight to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
