France has taken the rare step of limiting the U.S. ambassador’s access to senior government officials after he failed to appear at a scheduled meeting with the French foreign ministry. French Government Bars Ambassador After Skipping Summons
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced that U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner would no longer be permitted to meet with members of the French government until he personally explains his absence at a key diplomatic session. Kushner was summoned to discuss public remarks circulating from the U.S. Embassy and State Department concerning the killing of a French far-right activist in Lyon but instead sent a deputy official, citing prior commitments.
French authorities described the ambassador’s failure to appear as a breach of basic diplomatic protocol and signalled that this restriction remains in place until he provides satisfactory explanations directly to government ministers.
Dispute Rooted in Activist’s Death and Political Commentary
The controversy began after the U.S. Embassy in Paris highlighted comments from the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism linking the death of 23-year-old far-right activist Quentin Deranque to violent confrontations involving alleged far-left groups. That statement, which suggested a rise in violent radical leftism, was widely criticised by French officials as inappropriate interference in domestic public debate.
French leaders have stressed that any use of the tragedy for political ends, especially by foreign entities, is unacceptable and have insisted that diplomatic channels respect sovereign norms.
Wider Diplomatic Tensions and Protocol Questions
This incident marks the second time Ambassador Kushner has been summoned by the Quai d’Orsay and failed to attend. In a previous episode, French officials called on him after public criticism regarding France’s handling of antisemitism, a meeting he also missed. Critics say repeated no-shows call into question diplomatic decorum and the effective representation of U.S. interests in France.
