Philadelphia Eagles Assistant Clint Hurtt Confirms Interview for Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator Role
Philadelphia Eagles senior defensive assistant and defensive line coach Clint Hurtt has addressed reports regarding his candidacy for the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator position while coaching at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. Hurtt confirmed that he has interviewed for the vacancy, a role that became available after Vic Fangio departed Miami to become the Eagles’ defensive coordinator.
Hurtt is currently evaluating collegiate talent as a coach for the American team at the Senior Bowl. While focused on draft prospects, the annual event frequently serves as a backdrop for ongoing NFL staff adjustments. Hurtt recently joined the Eagles’ staff following a tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2022 to 2023.
The situation presents a notable coaching carousel dynamic between Philadelphia and Miami. Fangio left the Dolphins to lead the Eagles’ defense, and Hurtt is now a candidate to fill the void Fangio left behind. This connection is rooted in shared defensive philosophies, as Hurtt has previously worked within schemes similar to the system Fangio popularized.
However, the prospect of Hurtt taking over the Dolphins’ defense has met with some skepticism regarding his recent track record. During his time as the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator, the unit faced significant statistical challenges. In the 2023 season, Seattle’s defense ranked 30th in the league in total yards allowed and 25th in points allowed. These performance metrics suggest that replicating the success the Dolphins experienced under Fangio could be a substantial challenge for Hurtt, despite his extensive experience as a defensive line coach and assistant.
