Minnesota legal officials are turning to the public to help build a full picture of a controversial fatal shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, after federal authorities assumed sole control of the investigation. The move has intensified criticism from state leaders and fueled calls for transparency and local involvement in reviewing what happened.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison have publicly asked residents to forward any videos, photos or eyewitness accounts of the incident that resulted in the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis earlier this month. Good, a mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
FBI Takes Charge, Blocks State’s Access to Evidence
State officials initially planned a joint investigation with the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). However, federal prosecutors later decided the FBI would lead the probe exclusively, barring the BCA from accessing key evidence and potentially crucial forensic materials. This decision has sparked sharp disagreement between state and federal authorities.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have publicly criticized the federal approach, arguing that excluding local investigators undermines public confidence and limits accountability. Officials have also highlighted concerns about early federal statements defending the ICE agent and framing the incident before a full inquiry was completed.

The growing dispute centers on whether federal agents—acting under national immigration enforcement—can or should be subject to state review and potential prosecution.
