Darren Sharper Added to Virginia Sex Offender Registry
Former NFL safety Darren Sharper has officially registered as a sex offender in Virginia after being moved from a federal prison to a halfway house in Newport News. The 50-year-old is currently serving the latter part of his prison sentence and is expected to remain under supervision until 2028.
Authorities require convicted sex offenders to register when entering the community, making their information publicly available. Sharper’s registration includes his address and a recent photograph.
Transfer to Halfway House Marks Re-entry Process
Sharper was transferred from a correctional facility in Ohio to a residential re-entry center in Virginia on May 27. The move represents a transition stage designed to help inmates prepare for eventual release.
According to prison records, Sharper still has several years remaining on his sentence. His attorneys have previously described him as a model inmate who participated in educational programs while incarcerated.
Convictions Stemmed From Multi-State Sexual Assault Cases
The former Super Bowl champion pleaded guilty to charges connected to drugging and sexually assaulting women in several cities, including New Orleans, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Tempe, Arizona. He also admitted to federal conspiracy charges involving the distribution of controlled substances with the intent to commit sexual assault.
Sharper received an 18-year federal sentence in 2016, while related state sentences were ordered to run concurrently. Court documents indicated at least nine victims, though prosecutors suggested the number could be higher.
Fall From NFL Stardom
Before his legal troubles, Sharper enjoyed a successful 14-year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and won Super Bowl XLIV with New Orleans.
His arrest in 2014 ended his broadcasting career and marked a dramatic downfall for one of the league’s most accomplished defensive players.
