A woman carrying two knives was shot by New York City police in Times Square on Monday after allegedly stabbing two people in what authorities described as a random and unprovoked attack.
The violent incident unfolded in one of New York City’s busiest tourist areas, prompting a major police response. One of the stabbing victims later died, while another remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Two People Stabbed in Busy Times Square Area
According to police, the incident began shortly before 4:30 p.m. near Seventh Avenue in Times Square.
Authorities said the woman, identified as a 49-year-old Queens resident, allegedly pulled two large knives from a shopping bag and attacked a 68-year-old man who had recently left a subway station. Moments later, she allegedly stabbed a 32-year-old woman.
Both victims were taken to a hospital. The female victim later died from her injuries, while the male victim was reported to be in stable condition.
Police Confront Woman Carrying Two Knives
Following the stabbings, the woman moved toward an NYPD substation in the Times Square area, where officers confronted her.
Police repeatedly ordered her to drop the knives and spent several minutes attempting to bring the situation under control. Authorities said officers also used a Taser, but it did not stop the woman.
Officials said the woman continued to pose a serious threat while still armed with the knives. Two police officers then fired their weapons, striking her.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Into Times Square Police Shooting Underway
Police recovered two knives from the scene and launched an investigation into the incident.
Authorities said there was no immediate indication that the attack was linked to terrorism. Officials also said the suspect had a documented history of mental health-related incidents but no previous arrest record with the NYPD.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released as authorities continued their investigation and worked to notify family members.
The incident brought a sudden and deadly emergency to Times Square, one of the most heavily visited and closely policed locations in New York City.
