Massive Fire Erupts at Crans-Montana Bar During New Year’s Celebrations

A joyful New Year’s Eve gathering at a popular Alpine bar turned into a nightmare when a sudden fire ripped through the Le Constellation venue in Crans-Montana, Switzerland early on January 1, 2026. Officials report approximately 40 fatalities and more than 115 injuries, many of them serious, as emergency teams continue rescue and recovery operations.

Inferno Breaks Out in Packed Alpine Nightspot

The blaze erupted at around 1:30 a.m. local time inside the basement-level Le Constellation bar, a popular spot for tourists and locals to ring in the new year. With a packed crowd inside, flames spread rapidly, leaving panicked partygoers scrambling for narrow exits as smoke and heat overwhelmed the space. Many had to break windows or cling to one another while trying to escape.

Authorities said the venue was filled with young revelers from several countries when the fire ignited, making it one of the deadliest incidents in recent Swiss history. Hospitals across the region have declared emergency status to handle the surge of critical injuries.

Investigation Underway, Cause Still Unconfirmed

While investigators continue to piece together how the fire began, early reports suggest it may have started from a sparkler or candle close to flammable materials in the crowded bar. Officials have ruled out terrorism or intentional criminal acts, focusing instead on an accidental ignition as the likely cause.

Fire and safety experts are now examining structural layouts, emergency exits, and whether fire prevention standards were met. Families of victims are being notified as authorities work to identify the deceased and assist the injured.

Rescue Efforts and International Response

Local emergency services, aided by helicopters and volunteer teams, rushed injured partygoers to hospitals in Sion, Lausanne, Bern, Geneva, and Zurich, with some burn victims transferred outside of the Valais region for specialized care.

Government leaders and international communities have expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with Switzerland following the tragedy. Support centers and hotlines have been established to aid relatives and friends searching for loved ones.
