A 43-year-old Tennessee woman is facing charges of child neglect and endangerment after police say her two children — aged 2 and 4 — ended up in hospital after ingesting her THC hemp gummies. The children were found unresponsive, prompting a swift medical and legal response.
Children Hospitalized After Consuming THC Gummies
On November 28, deputies from the county sheriff’s office responded to a residence on Trenton Highway after a 911 call about a possible overdose involving two unresponsive children. The children — a toddler and a preschooler — had ingested an unknown number of their mother’s THC gummies that were stored in the bathroom.
Medical teams rushed the children to a regional children’s hospital, where they received treatment and were released within 48 hours.
Mother Arrested, Children Placed in State Custody
The mother, 43-year-old Candice Hickson, was arrested two days later and booked on charges of child abuse, neglect, and endangerment.
Following her arrest, both children were placed under the custody of the state’s child services agency after she failed a drug test for methamphetamine.
Her bail is reportedly set at US $25,000, and she is scheduled for a preliminary hearing mid-December.
Officials Warn: Keep THC Products Out of Children’s Reach
Authorities emphasized that, although hemp-derived THC gummies may be legal for adults in some states, these items can be extremely hazardous if left within reach of children. Law-enforcement officials urged parents to store such products as they would any medication — locked away and well out of reach of minors.
