President Aliyev Calls for New Global Mechanisms, Praises ‘Board of Peace’ Initiative in AnewZ Interview
MUNICH — In a candid interview with AnewZ regarding the shifting dynamics of global power, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev addressed the disintegration of the traditional world order, asserting that established international laws are effectively no longer in force. Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, President Aliyev emphasized the urgent need for new global mechanisms to replace institutions he described as “paralyzed.”
Responding to a question about the “crumbling” old world order, President Aliyev offered a stark assessment of the current geopolitical landscape. “International law is no longer valid,” Aliyev stated. “Many countries simply ignore it, and relying only on international law will not solve your problem. Azerbaijan’s example clearly demonstrates this.”
The President noted that the world is transitioning into an era defined less by the rule of law and more by the “rule of strength.” However, he expressed hope that the emerging order would not solely be determined by raw power. “The new world order should not mean that ‘whoever is stronger is right,'” Aliyev said. Instead, he called for “new mechanisms for a civilized world, new forms of relations, and a new international order.”
A central theme of the discussion was the “Board of Peace,” a new international initiative championed by U.S. President Donald Trump. President Aliyev confirmed that Azerbaijan has signed the founding charter of the Board of Peace in Davos and is participating as a founding member. He spoke highly of the initiative, contrasting it with older institutions that have failed to resolve modern conflicts.
“I think President Trump did a great job in initiating the Board of Peace, an institution with a great future,” Aliyev told AnewZ. His support for the new body comes amidst his sharp criticism of the United Nations. During the interview, he remarked that the UN is “totally paralyzed” and unable to influence critical global issues, leaving nations with “no alternative” but to seek new frameworks for cooperation.
The President’s comments reflect Azerbaijan’s broader foreign policy strategy, which has increasingly focused on bilateral alliances and new multilateral formats rather than relying on traditional international organizations. By joining the Board of Peace, Aliyev indicated that Azerbaijan intends to play an active role in shaping these new intergovernmental relations.
“The emergence of a new world order, or a new system of intergovernmental relations, was definitely in the pipeline,” Aliyev concluded. “The matter was who would take responsibility and make the first step.”
