A commercial airline pilot has been arrested on board an aircraft in Brazil shortly before takeoff, following accusations that he led a structured paedophile network. The suspect, identified by authorities as 60-year-old Sergio Antonio Lopes, was detained by police officers at Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo on Monday.
Lopes, a pilot for Latam Airlines, was in the cockpit preparing for a scheduled flight to Rio de Janeiro when authorities boarded the plane to execute the arrest warrant. Video footage released by law enforcement shows the pilot being escorted off the aircraft in handcuffs in front of passengers and crew.
The arrest was part of a broader investigation dubbed “Operation Fasten Your Seatbelts,” conducted by the Civil Police of Sao Paulo. Investigators allege that Lopes has been operating a sophisticated child abuse ring for at least eight years. According to police statements, the network involved the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, with the pilot allegedly paying impoverished families for access to their children.
Detectives revealed that the investigation, which began in October, has so far identified at least ten potential victims within the state of Sao Paulo, including three children from the same family. Authorities claim that Lopes used false identity documents to check minors into motels where the abuse reportedly took place. Evidence seized from the pilot’s mobile phone suggests that the network may have extended to other Brazilian states.
The pilot had recently returned from his honeymoon with his new wife, a psychologist. Police have stated that she was reportedly shocked by the allegations and is not considered a suspect in the investigation.
In a statement regarding the incident, Latam Airlines confirmed that they are collaborating fully with the authorities. The airline emphasized that the safety and well-being of its passengers remain its priority but did not comment on the specific charges against the employee.
Lopes faces multiple preliminary charges, including rape of a vulnerable person, sexual exploitation of children, and the production and storage of child sexual abuse material. Eight additional search and seizure warrants were executed against other suspects in Sao Paulo and the nearby town of Guararema as part of the ongoing operation. The pilot remains in custody as investigators continue to analyze seized digital devices to identify further victims.
