Tragic Winter Night Turns Deadly in Oklahoma City
An Oklahoma City mother lost her life in a bizarre sledding incident late Sunday, January 25, when she was struck by a vehicle after the sled she was riding became unattached from the car pulling it. The death has now led to murder charges against two adults, police said.
Accident Details: Sled Breaks Loose and Victim Fatally Struck
The fatal accident occurred around 11 p.m. when 31-year-old Makayla Mitchell was being pulled on a sled tied to a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Angel Walzier. According to law enforcement, the rope tethering the sled broke, leaving Mitchell stranded in the roadway. Moments later, a second vehicle driven by 24-year-old James Kirk struck her, killing her at the scene. Officers believe both drivers showed signs of impairment and ordered blood tests at the scene.
Criminal Charges: Murder and DUI Allegations
Both Walzier and Kirk have been arrested on counts of second-degree murder and aggravated driving under the influence, authorities confirmed. Bail has been set at $5 million for Walzier, while additional details on Kirk’s bond status have not been released. Prosecutors allege that intoxication played a role in the sequence of events leading up to the deadly collision.
Family and Community Response
Mitchell, described by loved ones as a devoted mother and “vibrant soul,” leaves behind a young daughter. In the aftermath of her passing, friends and family have started an online fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and provide financial support for her child. Those close to Mitchell remember her for her joy, warmth, and dedication to family.
