Off-Duty Corrections Officer Exchanges Gunfire With Suspect During Dispute Over Woman
An off-duty Florida Department of Corrections officer was involved in a shootout early Saturday morning in Southwest Miami-Dade following a verbal altercation. The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. near Southwest 112th Avenue and 170th Terrace in the West Perrine neighborhood.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the officer was jogging with an unidentified woman when a vehicle approached them. An unknown suspect inside the vehicle allegedly initiated a dispute specifically regarding the woman. Investigators state that the verbal argument quickly escalated when the suspect produced a firearm and discharged it at the officer. The off-duty officer reportedly returned fire in self-defense.
Law enforcement officials have described the event as a “non-contact shooting,” confirming that neither the officer nor the suspect appeared to be struck by gunfire during the exchange. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting and remains at large.
While the preliminary report relies largely on the account provided by the officer at the scene, authorities are continuing to investigate the specific circumstances surrounding the initial confrontation and the prior relationship, if any, between the parties involved. No arrests have been made, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking information regarding the suspect and the vehicle to verify the sequence of events. The Florida Department of Corrections has not yet released a separate statement regarding the officer’s involvement.
