Mexico’s President Calls for Deeper U.S. Security Cooperation After Trump Warns of Ground Attacks on Cartels RDCH7RNMU5OSTEVJ5YIYW7AURI

Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has urged tighter coordination with the United States on security strategy after former U.S. President Donald Trump announced intentions to launch land-based attacks against drug cartels within Mexico. In a press briefing, Sheinbaum stressed that collaboration — not unilateral action — is vital to respecting Mexican sovereignty and effectively tackling cross-border criminal networks.

Sheinbaum Seeks Stronger Bilateral Security Ties

President Sheinbaum has directed Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente to engage with U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to enhance joint efforts against transnational criminal organizations. She underscored that Mexico and the U.S. already have ongoing cooperation on intelligence sharing, cartel arrests, and operations against powerful groups such as the Sinaloa Cartel — work she says must expand without compromising national autonomy.

Sheinbaum also highlighted progress on reducing violent crime at home, mentioning reported declines in homicide rates since her administration began — a point she cited to illustrate improvements in domestic security.

Trump’s Escalation Raises Diplomatic Tensions

In a recent interview on American television, Trump claimed that the cartels were effectively controlling Mexico and suggested that U.S. military forces would “start … hitting land” to target drug trafficking operations. This statement followed a separate U.S. military action in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, adding urgency to Washington’s campaign against narcotics networks across the region.

Mexican officials have denounced any unilateral military action on Mexican soil as a violation of sovereignty and have reiterated that joint action through established frameworks is the only acceptable path forward.

Diplomacy Over Military Intervention

Sheinbaum’s government has repeatedly rejected the idea of foreign troops operating within Mexico, advocating instead for enhanced cooperation that respects legal norms and territorial integrity. Behind the scenes, analysts suggest Mexico may be working to deepen security ties to avoid potential unilateral intervention by the U.S. while strengthening its own counter-cartel operations.
