Suspect Taken Into Custody After Fatal Shooting of Bar Owner
A 47-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in Hammond, Indiana, in connection with the fatal shooting of a beloved bar owner in rural Momence, Illinois, law enforcement officials confirmed. The arrest comes less than 48 hours after the victim was found dead inside her business in a suspected robbery-related killing.
According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Julius E. Burkes Jr., was taken into custody outside his home and is being held in Indiana while awaiting extradition to Illinois to face a murder charge.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
Courtney Drysdale, 30, a mother and owner of The Line bar near the Illinois-Indiana state line, was pronounced dead at the scene Monday morning after being shot inside her business shortly before opening time, investigators said. The killing was ruled a homicide based on evidence gathered at the site.
Authorities say the suspect entered the bar, demanded money and, despite Drysdale’s compliance, shot her twice “execution-style” before fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect wearing a bright jacket and fleeing in a white BMW sedan.
Local law enforcement released these images and offered a reward of $5,000 for information, drawing significant public assistance that contributed to the swift arrest.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Friends and patrons remember Drysdale as a caring member of the community, leaving behind a fiancé and young daughter. Her bar has closed temporarily as investigators continue to review evidence and prepare charges.
Burkes is currently being held in Indiana and is expected to return to Illinois for prosecution once his legal matters in the neighboring state are resolved. Investigators continue to gather information as the case progresses.
