Tensions in the Middle East are rising sharply after Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a strong warning about the presence of U.S. military bases across the region. In his first public message since assuming leadership, he said countries hosting American bases should close them immediately or risk becoming targets of Iranian attacks. The statement comes amid an expanding conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, with missile strikes, drone attacks, and disruptions to global oil supply adding to the crisis.
Iran’s Warning Over U.S. Military Presence
Iran’s leadership has taken a more aggressive tone in the ongoing war, emphasizing that American military installations in neighboring countries could become direct targets. According to the statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Tehran believes these bases are actively supporting operations against Iran and therefore represent legitimate military targets.
Khamenei urged Gulf countries hosting U.S. forces to shut down these installations. He warned that if they remain operational, Iran would consider them part of the conflict and could carry out retaliatory strikes.
The message also emphasized that Iran sees its actions as part of a broader strategy of self-defense and resistance against foreign military pressure in the region.
Strait of Hormuz Closure Raises Global Concerns
Alongside the warning about U.S. bases, Iran’s leadership indicated that keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed could be used as a strategic tool in the conflict. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a large share of global oil shipments.
Since the war escalated, shipping traffic through the strait has sharply declined due to security threats and attacks on vessels. Oil tankers have been damaged in regional waters, and energy markets have reacted strongly to the risk of supply disruptions.
Analysts say any long-term closure of the strait could affect global oil prices and international trade, as the route handles a significant portion of the world’s daily oil exports.
Wider Conflict Spreads Across the Region
The confrontation between Iran and its adversaries has already expanded beyond direct strikes between the main parties. Missile and drone attacks have been reported across several Middle Eastern countries, targeting infrastructure, ports, and military facilities linked to the conflict.
The fighting intensified after joint strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets earlier in the war. Iran responded with retaliatory operations, including attacks on regional sites hosting U.S. military forces.
Diplomatic efforts are underway in several countries to prevent the situation from turning into a broader regional war, but tensions remain extremely high as both sides continue military operations.
